SKOTE is an improvisational, persona-based, performance collective that originated in Athens, Georgia in the late 80’s. Co-created by an ever-evolving community of friends dedicated to the value of artistic play and group dynamics, we are drawn towards the forsaken, the forlorn and the forbidden and often confuse glamour for the undesirable. Instead of relying solely on museums and galleries for artistic production and distribution, Skote is dedicated to pursuing alternate approaches to these traditional means. Through public, performative interventions and the Internet, Skote events and the accompanying documentation evoke an alternate universe that blurs the boundaries between visual art and theater, fiction and fact. Utilizing the unpredictability of public performance, including the conflation of audience and performer, we infiltrate the World Wide Web with our own psychologically charged profiles and video works to acknowledge the Internet’s potential to share and connect stories across borders and belief systems. The tools, outlets, and desire for our unique brand of art-o-tainment seem finally within our grasp.
